This Bridgerton spinoff, narrating the story of Queen Charlotte is definitely binge-worthy. The young Queen Charlotte and King George are both such a beautiful on-screen couple, their chemistry is intense and captivating. The story is fictional, based on two real historical figures.
Charlotte comes from a small Kingdom in Germany. It was very surprising when she got the marriage proposal, because they are such a small Kingdom and becoming the Queen of England, Ireland, and the colonies, seemed too much for her. She is a princess, her kingdom is lovely, but not at the same level as England. Charlotte understood very early on that there is a problem with the King. She could have never imagined him being mentally ill. She thought he must have a terrible reputation or maybe he is very ugly.
Charlotte brother became the King very early in his life, similar to George, they both are very young Kings. The Brother of Charlotte needs England as an ally and cannot refuse the wishes of such a powerful empire. He worries about his sister. On the other hand he needs this alliance to safeguard his kingdom, England is a very powerful ally.
The princess is so headstrong, how she talks to her brother, who is the King. She does not seem to respect other people’s authority. Even when she meets the Princess Augusta, the mother of King George, she definitely is more respectful and pleasant, but it takes effort and her brother’s guidance to behave like a docile princess. Inside she is a real royal, headstrong and dependable.
Queen Augusta comments on Charlotte being too dark skinned. Since the new Queen is dark skinned, from Moorish origin, they start a political wave called a new experiment. In which they start incorporating black skinned people as nobility with title. That is when we see Lord and Lady Danbury. It is delightful to see her backstory, especially because her character particularly loved in Bridgerton.
Lord Danbury is very old, and she married to him when she was so young. They have a great age difference and Lady Danbury is not in love with him at all. She appreciates her life, and is a good wife, but she does not enjoy him that much. Their sex scenes are well made, and her disgust is visible. This old man with this young woman, her head bumping on the back of the bed. Every time they finish, she rushes to take a bath. Her maid is so lovely and sweet.
Last minute, all this prominent black people from London are invited to the court for the royal wedding, and Queen Augusta calls Mr. Danbury Lord Danbury. This indicates that they will be Lord from now on. Being a Lord is a great privilege. He is be the first black skinned man to be a nominated as Lord. This is how Lady Danbury becomes a Lady. Unfortunately, the Lords and Lady’s in power, don’t like to share, and it is very difficult for them to get concessions. Lady Danbury is cunning with Princess Augusta. Thanks to her friendship with the Queen, she will be able, after some trials, to receive what a Lord and Lady are supposed to receive when nominated as such.
What do you think about the royal wedding? Like in Bridgerton everything is so picturesque and beautiful to watch. Which is your favorite scene?
Charlotte wants to escape before her marriage and during this instant, her climbing the wall, we see King George for the first time. Handsome, very sweet man, he is able to charm Charlotte into marrying him.
What did you think about this spinoff?
It is heart-breaking to see such a beautiful love crumbling because of the mental illness of the King. The first episodes show the point of view of Charlotte and also her present, when she is already an older Queen, and her young past self. She feels everything as it is her present.
Queen Charlotte has lived most of her life in isolation, reminiscing about her life and always deeply in love and protecting her King. They had many children. The present struggle of the Queen is for her children to have an heir. Unfortunately, her only legitimate grandchild and his mother died during childbirth. That is why she is pushing her sons and daughters to marry and secure the family line.
In the past, she is able to have an heir rather quickly. Even though the couples have their struggles, due to the King hiding his mental illness and being very absent in the marriage. They still manage to have a lot of steamy scenes in which they both try to hide how much they actually love each other, but their passion reveals how much in love they really are.
What do you think about their intense love?
At one point she can’t handle his absence and will become a real Queen, by acting like it and finding out why her king is so mysterious. At first, she is shocked, but then slowly realizes how much she loves him and that she wants to be by his side, no matter what. He also accepts his love for her. His story is narrated during the last episodes. She will treat him with the respect of the King and be by his side after he admits how much he loves her.
Must watch, especially for the many side stories. One I am especially fond of is the story of Bramsley and the Queen. He is the hand of the Queen, and became to be a strong ally of the Queen. Safeguarding her reputation and status. They grow a very strong bond, and he stays with her all these years.
