Sandman (Tom Sturridge),what a mystical mythological fantasy drama!
I was not sure about the title of the series and what this show was about.
Nevertheless, I started watching and it is quite intriguing.
For all the fantasy lovers over there, who do not shy away from some magic. This is a show for you.
First of all, the Sandman is an intriguing character and his character building is very slow and mysterious.
This series is based on a comic book, written by Neil Gaiman and is full of mythological references.
If you forgot who the Sandman was, or you never heard about him, I knew him since childhood, as a myth: he is this magical being who blows sand in your eyes, to make you fall asleep and have dreams.
I never understood how come your eyes would not itch when he blows sand in your face. Well of course I know now, that it is magical sand, so it is not quite the same.
This being from the show is far more mystical and intriguing:
He is the King of Dreams. He, who creates dreams and nightmares and is the master of his own realm, the Dreaming.
With his helmet, sand, crystal and familiar animal, the raven, he ruminates between the real world and his world, the world of dreams.
“Nightmares are the dreams that stay awake in the waking world, and can escape.”
The Sandman captures these nightmares and banishes them.
While he is banishing one of the nightmares, who escaped the dream world: the Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), the Sandman is called upon with a spell. He is forcefully summoned and caught in this witch circle, with special symbols, which keep him captive and unconscious at first.
Here, they strip him away of his magical possessions and leave him there. Naked and alone.
From this moment on he is prisoner of Roderick Burgees(Charles Dance).
The wealthy man who summed him, wants him to bring his dead son back to life, and has also other request to further himself, such as eternal life.
The Sandman can’t grant him these wishes, and does not utter a word to his capturer. This will go on for many years, too many years.
The Corinthian knows something strange has happened to the Sandman, his king. When he discovers that Roderick Burgees captured him, this nightmare seizes the opportunity to help Burgees keep the Sandman imprisoned:
The Sandman should be held as a prisoner, will be guarded at all times and no-one can fall asleep in his presence.
The Sandman will be captive for many years, loosing everything in the process. Never uttering a word to his captures, he waits, until he is able to get his revenge. He will have to face many trials and obstacles.
When he is finally free, nothing is as it was, the world has lived many years without dreams, and has become utterly hopeless.
First the Dreaming needs to find his way back to his magical possessions. This is not easy. The mistress of Roderick Burgees fled with his possessions, which have long been scattered around the world of the living and not only. Also in Hell.
Did you watch this series already? What do you think?
