Anthony Bridgerton chooses to end his relationship with Siena, because he is haunted by the idea of not being an acceptable viscount. Their relationship could jeopardise his reputation and he was not ready to do that. He did not explain to Siena, why he broke up his relationship that day. Apparently until then he was providing for her, even having her live with him in his apartment. Young opera singer, got her heart crushed from the viscount, she thought they were so in love and he would never hurt her.
How would you have felt? If you are her, would you have ever started a relationship with the viscount? Or if you are him, would you have left her because of family duties?
After their separation Siena lives together with Madame Delacroix, the modiste of high society London. They are working women for the upper class. One, a tailor and fashion creator, Madame Delacroix, and the other a very popular opera singer at the theatre.
Honestly, they both enjoy more freedom then the debutantes. They can go out when they please, date men, and enjoy what is given to them. They are not as well protected and wealthy as the debutantes, but they enjoy privileges by living among the wealthy elite of London. What would you have preferred, being the upper class working women, or a debutant landing some Sir, Lord, Viscount, Duke, or maybe even a Prince?
Anthony Bridgerton is conflicted after he ends his affair with Siena and becomes cold and distant.
Benedict Bridgerton, the more artistically inclined brother, meets Sir Henry Granville, and he invites him to an artistic get together at his house. Benedict arrives, and some painters and artists of London are surrounding naked models, painting them on canvas. He is invited to sit down, draw and have fun.
Benedict is very critical about his own art work and wants to do it perfect. Sir Granville is utterly nice with Benedict and has some advice for the young artist, he tells him how this painting sessions are for fun and do not have to be perfect. Although he is a really good artist and should continue this craft. Moreover, he tells him how it is a joy to be the middle brother, the one without many responsibilities!
Their friendship is really interesting. The Bridgerton brothers don’t seem to share the same evening habits. The viscount is out on his own with his upper class friends in the clubs for high society men. Benedict does not feel that is his place, he likes to wonder and be curious. London after all is a great place to be, especially for an aspiring artist. He is introduced by Sir Henry Granville to this underground scene. These are unconventional, still very elegant places. Benedict is introduced to a new London, no one of his brothers seem to know about: The artistically, sexually more liberated scene!
Here he discovers for the first time how it is to be with more women at the time, and how free they can be. Madame Delacroix, the official seamstress of high society, also visits these private parties. This is where they meet and start an affair. When he is wandering around the halls of this house during a party, he opens one door and discovers Sir Granville with Lord Wetherby, in a homosexual relation. Benedict has never seen a homosexual encounter and is quite shocked.
Would you have been shocked?
At this time no-one would talk about sexuality. Men were more aware then women about sex, but their view of sex must have been limited. If he himself did not feel a homosexual attraction, how should he know it exists?
He feels quite uncomfortable and avoids Sir Granville for a little while. What would you have done?
Sir Granville has a beautiful wife and is well respected in the official social circles. He notices the detachment from Benedict, somehow sensing his awkwardness. So when he meets Benedict he explains him how painful it is to live in secret and that he and Lord Wetherby love each other. Benedict asks him what about his wife, and Granville explains how his wife is fine with this arrangement. She can also enjoy more liberties then other Ladies. Benedict will need a little more time to process this story, but he grows enormously from this experience, broadening his thinking about sexuality, life and arrangements.
The third brother Collin, falls deeply in love with Marina Thompson. She is sweet, but harbours a secret. How did you like her character in the show? She is witty and keen to get what she wants: A good life for her. That is why she tries to get rid of her pregnancy with a tea. Yes, some women had sex at that time, and Marina was in love and got pregnant from a soldier, who now was fighting in Spain. She still loves him, but he did not come back. Collin is the youngest brother, but very mature men. He was about to escape with Marina when he did finds out about her pregnancy, through Lady Whistledon gossip paper. How did Lady Whisteldon know?
Marina has many ups and downs, what can a women do at that time of age? Was it ok to try to trick Collin into marriage?
The pregnancy of Marina became public because of Lady Whistledon. So who is Lady Whisteldon?
Until now we still don’t know who Lady Whisteldon is right? It will only be revealed at the end of the series.
Isn’t Lady Whisteldon amazing? Well aside from ruining peoples lives, she is a very skilled writer, who brings us on this journey behind the scenes. Although it is not really moral nor ethical to make a business out of peoples gossip, Lady Whisteldon is thriving and we as an audience are also on her side, right?
The Queen is not happy with the paper, and wants to find this gossip tell it all author!
Eloise is an actually a fan of Lady Whisteldon, but she has to work for the Queen, when the Queen overhears Eloise talking with Penelope about finding out who Lady Whisteldon is. That intrigues the Queen and she wants to know more about her progress.
Eloise actually loves the way Lady Whisteldon is independent and makes her own way through her writing. At the beginning she does not know where to start, and actually thinks that a maid is Lady Whistledon. The maid laughs at her theory and tells her that she would never have so much time in a day to also write a paper. Coming to the conclusion that no maid could have a free moment to write?
This is when Eloises starts to focus on other candidates, but she is so off, right? She even thinks Madame Delacroix is Lady Whisteldon. She storms in her shop to ask her to write something nice about the Featherington after the scandal with Marina. Who is Lady Whisteldon if not Madame Delacroix?
It was always exactly in front of her face, her best friend Penelope is Lady Whisteldon and is not caught by the Queen thanks to Eloise, who helps her escape. Who did you think was Lady Whisteldon?
What can we except von season 2?
We know the character of Anthony Bridgerton has been broken down by the break up with his lover Siena. At the end of the season, after this afflicting break up, he is disposed to give up his reputation and start a life with Siena by his side. He invites her officially to the ball of his sister, the duchess. He thinks that now, since his sister is the duchess, after marrying the Duke, he does not to work so hard to keep up a good reputation for his family and can be together with Siena.
When Anthony Bridgerton goes to her apartment to pick her up, she is with another man and refuses to go with him. Explaining how she is not the woman he needs, the arm candy he can bring to his balls. This is not her, and she does not want to be someone else or change the way her life is. She prefers being with a man who does not want her to change!
This is a heartbreaking choice for her. As a working woman, she has responsibilities toward herself and her future. She was very badly disappointed when Anthony Bridgerton had left her the first time, not knowing he would leave her like this, she does not trust him anymore. The viscount is so disappointed he ends up not going at the ball of his sister. In the morning when he sees his family, he is not happy, but focused. He tells them he will be finding a woman, but not for love.
Is that really what he wants in his heart? Well, apparently Anthony Bridgerton has stopped his heart and entered only societal norms in his brain. He is not in the mood of thinking about love and sees it fit to find a wife. This last words of the viscount will be important to understand the next season. I haven’t read the books, so I really don’t know what to expect. He will probably try to find a wife, someone perfect for the society and his family, not for love. We’ll see where this will bring him and the whole cast members.
Who is your favourite character of the story?
